Autumn Term: Week 2

The Pre-Prep and Nursery children have worked very hard in their first full week back at school.

The Year 2 art topic this half term is Self Portraits. The children have been looking at the works of different artists and have created their own, using watercolours. These are now on display for other classes to enjoy and admire their careful brush strokes. Their history topic this half term is the Great Fire of London. Forest School made the perfect location for the children to learn about safe fire building and, as a reward, they were allowed to toast and eat marshmallows.

Forest School Year 2 Toasting marshmallows

The Year 1 children had great fun practising their addition skills using dominoes, number-bond bingo and, always a favourite, loop games. Their history topic this half term is Toys Past and Present. As a starter they brought in their favourite toy and described what properties they have and what they are made from. They were allowed a few minutes to play with them too!

The Reception children have started to learn about autumn, using the wonderful book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. In Forest School they made their own Leaf Men, thinking creatively as they worked. The Reception teachers always find novel and exciting ways of teaching phonics lessons. This week, for the phoneme ‘p’ the children made their own popcorn pots and popped popcorn, making the ‘p’ sound as it popped! They were hugely excited. For the phoneme ‘n’ they made paper aeroplanes and flew them in a race, whilst practising the sound ‘n’.

The Chaffinch and Kingfisher children have been focusing on mathematics, in particular shape and measure. They explored their new environment outside and used the buckets to weigh the stones. They also measured the distance between the scramble logs to safely travel over the equipment. They then measured all the ingredients to make the best sourdough bread – it was very yummy! In class, they experimented with different resources to measure the height of their friends and used a range of shapes to see which of the resources would make the tallest and safest tower. The children discovered that not only is mathematics fun, it can be learned anywhere.

nursery and pre prep bog week 2

The Lodge building, housing the younger Nursery children, has been abuzz with the sound of children and staff singing and playing happily.  The Nightingale children explored colours and created some beautiful paintings. They made the most of the lovely weather and played in the garden on the bikes and cars. The Robin class listened to soothing classical music as they painted. They then explored a variety of tools to create some beautiful collages and they made the most of the beautiful sunshine.  The Sparrow children are becoming more familiar with their new environment, both inside and out. They have also been exploring paint and having lots of messy fun.

The children all deserve a lovely restful weekend, ready to start all over again next week.
