Helping to leave plenty of fish in the sea

Today is National Fish and Chip day (yes, really) and here at St Andrew’s Prep we give everybody the opportunity to get stuck in!

Our fish is sustainably sourced, meeting the Marine Stewardship Council standard, helping protect the productivity and health of our oceans thus leaving enough fish in the sea, respecting habitats and ensuring people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods.

Our fabulous caterers, Holroyd Howe, led by our Catering Manager, Ted Baldwin, work hard to reduce the impact they make on the planet. Ted and his team make sure they care for the environment by sourcing local and seasonal foods whilst ensuring they offer balanced healthy diets to our pupils.

Food waste in the UK is staggeringly high. 10 million tonnes of food is wasted each year with 20- 40% of produce being rejected by retailers because it is misshapen. We are proud to use wonky food, helping farmers to use less resources such as water and energy and reducing landfill and we positively encourage our pupils to ‘take what they eat, but eat what they take.’

Today, Hannah, Sustainability and Environmental Manager for Holroyd Howe, was on hand at lunch time to answer any of the children’s questions.
