Year 2 visit to Lewes Castle

St Andrews Prep Year 2 in Lewes CastleThe Year 2 pupils had an excellent visit to Lewes Castle on Tuesday. The cold weather didn’t dampen their enthusiasm. They learned about the structure of the Castle and walked along a winding path to the Keep. They climbed a steep spiral staircase to the top of the Keep, from there they saw the magnificent view over the Downs. On the way up, they stopped on the middle floor for a quick practice aiming and shooting their pretend arrows through the arrow slits!

The children were lucky enough to handle artefacts, some of which dated back to when the Castle was built nearly 1000 years ago. They tried on different types of armour and were amazed how heavy some items were.

After lunch they went into the Barbican and dressed up as people who would have lived in a Norman Castle. They re-enacted jousting with much hilarity. They also tried their hand at being stone masons to make an arrow slit.

The children really enjoyed their day and learned many new facts. They were impeccably behaved and a real credit to the school.
