Autumn Term: Week 11

This week is a special week in the Pre-Prep and Nursery calendar. It’s Arts Week and a firm favourite with the children and staff. Although the children perceive this as just fun, they are in fact still learning a huge amount.

This annual event is always a fantastic opportunity for the children to take on exciting and creative projects. The class teachers have chosen artists that provide an inspiring stimulus for them to explore and experience a diverse range of media. Over the course of the week, the children worked on a variety of projects based on their chosen artists. Some of these will continue until the end of the term.

Year 2 have been studying Kandinsky this week. This Russian artist particularly loved shape and colour and his work has inspired the children to create their own abstract pieces of art. It has been a bit different but very exciting to teach art lessons live online this week and Mrs Tomsett and Mrs Worsell would like to say a big well done to all the children for their enthusiasm, concentration, adaptability and resilience.

In Year 1, Art Week started off with a PowerPoint about artist Andy Warhol. Inspired by this, the children started their activities with great enthusiasm. Due to the current circumstances, the children used their great powers of adaptability and carried on this enthusiasm when working online at home. They have been really creative and wonderful masterpieces are now ready to be displayed. The children have shown such resilience; both Mrs Reed and Mrs Bates could not be more proud of all the Year 1 children.

Miss Maynard and Mrs Cracknell are also incredibly proud of how adaptable the Reception children have been. They have all tried their best to carry on Arts Week at home. On Monday morning the children looked at the artwork of Piet Mondrian, a Dutch abstract artist and created their own versions of one of his pieces. This continued at home and the children have created some beautiful pieces of abstract art, using different media and techniques, such as collage, painting and even on art apps. The children have been engaged and excited to share their creations with their friends online. They also looked at Elmer by David McKee. Elmer is a patchwork elephant and colourful patchwork lends itself very well to the block artwork of Mondrian. The children looked at why Elmer was special and then why they themselves are special. They communicated this in some lovely pieces of writing and drawings. Well done Reception!

A huge well done and thank you to all the children, staff and parents for their great teamwork this week. You are all super stars.
