Heroes

One of the things I ask pupils when I am
interviewing them is whether or not they have a
hero or heroine. Quite often it is someone famous
and the common answers feature Usain Bolt and
Jessica Ennis-Hill. However, just occasionally, my
ears prick up when I hear, ‘My Mum’ or ‘My Dad’,
with an explanation of why they have been inspired
by someone so close to them. Often it comes
down to a recognition of the time invested, the
discussions and guidance given, the shared
experiences of going to the cinema, watching a
football match or seeing the attractions of London.
Parents would say they are just doing their duty but,
in so many ways, that is what heroes often do.
Policemen and women, the fire service, army,
doctors and nurses all do their duty each day and
they are all heroes. They don’t need superpowers;
they just need to be committed. We can all be
heroes if we commit to what we are doing and do
our duty.
