A big world

As a child, I remember watching The Poseidon Adventure (the classic one starring Gene Hackman) and being left open-mouthed at the final scene. The bit where the survivors emerge on to the upturned hull of the enormous ship in the enormous ocean that surrounded it. It showed me that while they had been battling on through this great adventure, there was a world continuing outside the ship – a big world – where everything would be ok again once they had got through it.

Weirdly, that was the image that sprung to mind as I contemplated the significance of today. This term has at times felt like the ship has been turned upside down. Things have looked a little familiar but have never quite been as we know them. And as we now find ourselves on the very final day of term, on the hull of the ship, we can be satisfied that we have come through an adventure, that we have learnt a great deal about ourselves, and that there is a big world out there still going on and still to be enjoyed.
