St Wilfrid’s given £584

Some of our Pre-Prep and Junior children presented a cheque to St Wilfrid’s Hospice last week.  The cheque for £584 was given to Mr Simon Cosham of St Wilfrid’s.  The money was collected at the end of the Pre-Prep and Junior Christmas performances.  Many thanks to all for their generosity to this very worthy cause.

Meads Magic

It was dark, cold and raining but that didn’t dampen the spirits of some of our Year 8 children as they took to Meads Street to sing carols at the second Meads Magic event.  Thank you to Daisy Venables for allowing us to fill her shop, Barley Sugar, when the rain threatened to dissolve the song sheets. The children really enjoy singing carols and for Mrs Wicks, our Head of Music, it is a chance for an extra rehearsal for the end of term service.  Thank you to Mrs Wicks and Mr Koc for leading the carollers.

It’s a dog’s life

Following the annual sponsored walk earlier in the Autumn Term, St Andrew’s presented a cheque for £2,000 to one of the chosen charities, Canine Partners.
The cheque was presented to Ruth Narracott, the Charities Trainer for East Sussex and John Wilton, President of The Rotary Club of Eastbourne Sovereign who had organised the marshalling of the walk across the Downs along with members of the Rotary Clubs of Eastbourne Sovereign, Eastbourne AM and Beachy Head.
An incredible £520 was raised by one of the youngest nursery walkers and she was rewarded for her efforts with a Canine Partners teddy bear.   Together, the children pictured raised over £1220 – well worth the hours spent yomping the Downs.

Eastbourne College U12 Rugby Tournament

The St Andrew’s U12 rugby squad won the Eastbourne College Shield at the annual U12 Prep Schools Tournament.  The team had a superb set of results again their opposition teams of St Ronan’s, Vinehall and Bede’s winning all of their games.  Chris Pinch, Joint Director of Sport at the school said it was ‘an outstanding all-round performance highlighted by the fact that the coaches and officials commented on the St Andrew’s boys’ excellent behaviour, manners and sportsmanship.  They were a credit to the school.’

Antibullying Week

As part of the school’s PSHE programme, St Andrew’s welcomed Firehouse Theatre Productions to give a thoughtful lesson on the hurt caused by bullying.

One of the Year 6 girls said, ‘I thought that “The B Word” was great. It sent the message across really clearly. Also it was about moving to a new school and how hard it is when you are new. The B in the title stands for bullying. It said that no one deserves to be bullied or cyber-bullied. Years 1 to 6 watched it and it had something for each year. All of us liked it.’.

Maths Challenge

St Andrew’s welcomed 78 children from 12 local schools as they took part in a Year 5 Maths Challenge.  The children were engaged in a variety of mathematical activities for much of the afternoon with the top scorers taking part in a hit or miss number game to win prizes at the end. The Year 8 children who volunteered to mark were a credit to St Andrew’s. All the children joined their parents for tea in the dining room after the challenge.

Annual Sponsored Walk

We were blessed with glorious weather as the school set out for its annual sponsored walk last Saturday. The field filled with children, teachers, parents and dogs all eager to get onto the Downs and with a short, medium and long walk on offer, there was no excuse not to shake off some of the excesses of the summer holidays. Cllr Mike Thompson, the Mayor of Eastbourne was there to set everyone off.

This year, the sponsorship monies raised will be split between two charities: Canine Partners, a charity that provides assistance dogs for people with disabilities and The Rotary Club of Alleppey in India that provides sewing machines for widows.

Thank you to all the volunteers from the Rotary Club of Eastbourne who once again gave their time to guide and marshal the walk and also to John Boyle and his musical car, Melody, who gave the crowd some rousing tunes to start the walk.

Piper family raise £1,030 for trust fund

This summer and for the sixth year, the Piper family opened up their home to run a cafe for charity. This year, they sold homemade pizzas, quiches, toasties, sandwiches and cream teas to raise money for the Ben McNicol Trust Fund. Six year old Ben died earlier this year; he had been a friend of the children and had attended the Lodge Nursery. Ben’s brother , Tom, helped with the cafe which raised £1,030 for the charity.
